The best swimming in Santorini happens in the morning. Calmer waters. Brighter light. Fewer boats. Swim at Red Beach, snorkel at White Beach, enjoy a Greek BBQ lunch on board — and still have your whole afternoon free. From €160 per adult — hotel pickup, lunch, and drinks included.
Licensed by the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism. Fully insured. No hidden fees.
The Experience
Yes — the morning is the best time to swim in Santorini. The water is clearer. The winds are calmer — the Meltemi picks up in the afternoon. The popular coves are less crowded because most boats do not leave until lunchtime. And the light is bright Mediterranean sun, which means you see every colour of the volcanic cliffs, every fish beneath the surface, every shade of blue in the caldera.
This is the cruise our guests book when they want to swim — not just dip their toes. The one families choose because the timing works perfectly with young children. The one swimmers and snorkellers recommend because the visibility is genuinely better in the morning. The one that gets you back to your hotel by 3pm with the whole afternoon and evening still ahead of you.
In five hours, you will swim in crystal-clear water beneath volcanic cliffs, snorkel in secluded coves accessible only by boat, soak in natural hot springs, eat a freshly prepared Greek meal with local wine at a quiet anchorage, and sail back along the caldera with the Mediterranean sun on your skin. Then your driver takes you back to your hotel — and you still have the whole afternoon. Beach. Explore. Nap. Sunset dinner. You did not lose a day — you gained a morning you will never forget.
Ultimate Route is a Santorini-based company. We own and operate our own catamaran. We do not resell, subcontract, or put you on someone else's boat. Your crew — your captain, your host, your photographer for the day — work for us, and they work for you. Learn more about Ultimate Route →
Not all morning boat tours are the same. Here is what makes ours different.
Morning water is calmer and clearer. The Meltemi wind picks up after midday, stirring sediment. In the morning, visibility reaches up to 30 metres — you see the seabed, the fish, every colour of volcanic rock. This is why serious swimmers and snorkellers book the morning cruise.
Maximum 16 guests. Most cruises sail with 8–14. You will never share the boat with a large tour group. Space to stretch out on the trampoline nets, room to breathe, and the coves are quieter in the morning before other boats arrive.
Full Mediterranean sunlight means colours pop. Red Beach looks red — not silhouetted. Your underwater photos actually work. White Beach looks white. The caldera cliffs show every layer of volcanic rock. The crew know the best angles on the boat and will happily photograph you using your own phone or camera.
While you swim, your crew grills fresh chicken souvlaki on board. The smell of Greek BBQ on the water, followed by lunch and a cold glass of Santorini Assyrtiko wine at a quiet anchorage — this is the experience. You have earned it after three swim stops.
Back at your hotel by 3pm. You did not lose a day to a tour — you invested a morning in an unforgettable experience, and the rest of the day is a bonus. Beach. Explore the island. Nap by the pool. Sunset dinner. You have all of it.
Ultimate Route owns and operates its own catamaran. We do not resell, subcontract, or put you on a third-party boat. Your crew work for us — and for you. This means consistency, accountability, and genuine hospitality.
Five hours. Ten stops. Three unforgettable swims. Back in time for a late lunch — on land, if you still have room.
Your air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz arrives at your accommodation. Your driver greets you by name. Morning light over Santorini. The air is still cool. The island is quiet. You are on holiday.
You step aboard a clean, modern sailing catamaran. Meet your captain and crew. Brief safety orientation — two minutes, professional, never alarming. A welcome drink is placed in your hand. The morning sun is warm but not yet hot. Bare feet on deck. This is how a holiday morning should feel.
Engine off. Sails up. The catamaran glides out along Santorini's volcanic coastline. The morning light hits the caldera cliffs full-on — you can see every layer of red, black, and ochre rock, every cave, every detail. The water is glassy. The Meltemi has not started yet. The crew begin pointing out landmarks. You realise this is what everyone means by "the best time of day."
The anchor drops near Santorini's famous Red Beach. The volcanic cliff towers above you — a sheer wall of deep rust-red rock plunging into crystal-clear water. Morning light penetrates deeper — you can see the seabed, the fish, every colour of the volcanic rock. This is the best time of day for underwater photos. Mask, snorkel, and fins are provided. Swim, float, or just sit on the ladder with your feet in the water.
Second swim stop. A secluded cove accessible only by boat — no roads, no sunbeds, no crowds. In the morning, you are likely to have this to yourself. Most tour boats do not arrive until after midday. White cliffs contrast dramatically against turquoise water. Float on your back. Look up at the sky. This is why the morning is better.
Cruise past the volcanic island of Palea Kameni. Optional swim in the warm sulphur springs — the water is noticeably warmer here, a natural geothermal bath. The sulphur gives the water a distinctive mineral quality. Note: the sulphur-rich water may temporarily discolour light-coloured swimwear. Dark swimwear is recommended for this stop.
The captain selects a quiet anchorage for lunch. Greek BBQ is served: grilled chicken souvlaki, traditional Greek salad with feta and olives, homemade tzatziki with fresh bread, grilled vegetables, and a fresh fruit platter. Unlimited Santorini Assyrtiko wine, Greek beer, and soft drinks flow freely. You have earned this after three swim stops. Santorini wine tastes better at noon when you are on holiday.
One last swim if you want more time in the water. Or just stay on board — float on the trampoline nets, close your eyes, soak up the sun, and enjoy being exactly where you are. The crew refills your drink. There is no rush. This is the moment you will think about when you are back at your desk.
Sail back along the caldera. The cliffs look different in full daylight — you can see every layer of volcanic rock, every cave, every detail. The sun is warm. The sails are full. The afternoon stretches ahead of you, completely free. You did not lose a day — you gained a morning you will never forget.
Dock at the marina. Your Mercedes transfer is waiting. Back at your hotel before 3pm. The whole afternoon and evening ahead of you. Beach. Explore the island. Nap by the pool. Sunset dinner in Oia. You did not lose a day — you invested a morning, and the rest is yours.
Times are approximate. Your exact schedule is confirmed after booking. The captain may adjust the route slightly for optimal weather, sea conditions, and coves with the fewest other boats.
All photographs are genuine images taken during our cruises. No stock photography. No filters that misrepresent the experience.
Why Morning
Morning light penetrates the water at a deeper angle. Visibility reaches up to 30 metres in calm conditions. The Meltemi wind picks up after midday, stirring sediment and reducing visibility. In the morning, you see the seabed, the fish, every rock formation — the underwater world is fully visible. For snorkellers and photographers, the difference is significant.
The Meltemi is the northern wind that blows across the Aegean during summer months. It typically builds from late morning and peaks in the afternoon. Morning cruises sail before it strengthens — the sea is often glassy, the anchorages are sheltered, and swimming is easier and more enjoyable for everyone. Morning cancellations due to weather are rare.
Morning air temperatures in Santorini are 24–28°C (75–82°F) — warm but not punishing. The sun is strong but not yet at its peak. You can stay in the water longer, you are less likely to overheat, and the experience feels active and refreshing rather than endurance-like. Water temperatures range from 19°C in May to 25°C in August — cool enough to be invigorating, warm enough to stay in for as long as you want.
Most tour boats in Santorini depart at lunchtime or early afternoon. In the morning, the coves are quieter. At White Beach — accessible only by boat — you are likely to have the anchorage to yourselves, or share it with one other vessel at most. Red Beach sees a fraction of its afternoon traffic. The volcanic hot springs are peaceful. This is morning's unspoken advantage.
The morning cruise gives you full daylight photography — not silhouettes. Red Beach actually looks red. The caldera cliffs show every geological layer. Your underwater photos work — the colours are accurate, the visibility is high, and you can actually see people's faces. The crew know the best positions on the boat and will happily photograph you using your own phone or camera. These are the bright, vibrant photos that make people back home say "I want to go there."
This is the unsung benefit of the morning cruise — and the one our guests mention most often in reviews. You are back at your hotel by 3pm. The whole afternoon and evening stretch ahead of you. Go to the beach. Explore the island by car. Take a nap by the pool. Have a long, lazy sunset dinner in Oia. You did not surrender your day to a tour — you invested a morning in an unforgettable experience, and the rest of the day is a bonus. Many of our guests do the morning cruise and a sunset dinner on land — best of both worlds.
The morning cruise finishes before children get tired, hungry, or sun-weary. Lunch is included — no "I'm hungry" moments. Swimming stops are paced to keep children engaged. The crew keeps a watchful eye. And returning by mid-afternoon means you still have family time for the rest of the day — not a late return with exhausted children. For families with younger children (ages 5+), the morning cruise is the better choice.

Up to 30 metres — best in the morning
Reef fish, parrotfish, octopus, rare turtles
High-quality mask, snorkel, and fins are provided — all sanitised between cruises. Access to the water is via a wide, easy ladder from the rear swim platform. The crew assists on request. A fresh water deck shower is available to rinse off after every swim. Morning visibility means you actually see what you are snorkelling over.
You do not need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy this cruise. Life jackets are available for every guest, and the crew keeps a close watch during all swimming stops. If you prefer to stay on board, enjoy the scenery, a cold drink, and the peaceful anchorage — there is absolutely no pressure to get in the water. The morning sun on deck is warm but not punishing.
Life jackets in child sizes are provided. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the water at all times. The crew keeps a general watch over all swimmers, but direct parental supervision is essential. Morning swimming is ideal for children — the water is calm, the sun is not yet at its peak, and they return before getting overtired.
The volcanic hot springs at Palea Kameni contain natural sulphur. The water is warm (24–28°C) and may temporarily discolour light-coloured swimwear. We recommend dark swimwear for this stop. The sulphur smell is natural and harmless. The springs are a unique experience — just be aware of the swimwear issue before you pack.
Yes. The caldera waters are generally calm and sheltered — especially in the morning before the Meltemi wind builds. There is no dangerous marine life in the caldera — no sharks, no jellyfish of concern, no hazardous creatures near swimming areas. Sea urchins can occasionally be found near rocks — the crew advises you not to touch them and to keep a safe distance. The swimming stops are in open, clear water with excellent visibility.
Modern Sailing Catamaran — Lagoon 440 or equivalent
13–15 metres (44–50 feet)
Maximum 16 guests — most cruises sail with 8–14
Foredeck with trampoline nets · Shaded aft deck with cushioned dining · Wide rear swim platform with easy ladder
Fresh water deck shower · Private bathroom · Changing cabin · Bluetooth sound system · USB charging · WiFi
The twin-hull design is the key to the experience. A catamaran is significantly wider and more stable than a traditional single-hull boat. You can walk around freely. You can stretch out on the trampoline nets at the bow. You can sit in the shade or the sun — the choice is yours.
The rear swim platform makes getting in and out of the water easy. Wide steps. A secure handrail. The crew is there if you need a hand.
The shaded aft deck is where lunch is served. Cushioned seating around a central table. The open foredeck is where guests sunbathe and relax between swim stops — the trampoline nets right at the front are the best seat on the boat.
Your crew are the difference between a good cruise and an unforgettable one.
Licensed by the Hellenic Coast Guard. Years of experience sailing the Santorini caldera specifically — not just any water, these waters. Knows every cove, every anchorage, every wind pattern. Your safety is their absolute priority — the cruise will not sail if conditions are unsafe, no exceptions.
English-speaking. Trained in both marine safety and hospitality. Local to Santorini — they grew up here and know the island's stories, history, and hidden spots. They serve your lunch, refill your wine, point out landmarks, offer to take your photographs, and quietly ensure everything runs smoothly.
"Your crew are also your hosts. You are not a passenger — you are a guest. The difference matters."

5 hours from marina departure to return. Pickup is 60–90 minutes before departure. Drop-off immediately after. Total door-to-door: approximately 6.5–7 hours. Back at your hotel by approximately 14:45.
Departure time: approximately 09:30 from the marina. Pickup times vary by location. Your exact schedule is confirmed after booking.
Santorini's sailing conditions are generally calm between April and October. Morning conditions are typically the calmest of the day — the Meltemi wind builds from late morning, so morning cancellations are rare. If winds are forecast above 6–7 Beaufort, the captain may cancel the cruise.
If your cruise is cancelled due to weather: a full refund or free rebooking to the next available date — your choice. Confirmed at the time of booking.
The catamaran's twin-hull design is significantly more stable than a monohull boat. Most guests feel no discomfort. The caldera waters are generally sheltered — especially in the morning.
If you are prone to motion sickness: take preventative medication 1 hour before departure (consult your pharmacist). Acupressure wristbands help some guests. Stay on the shaded aft deck. Keep your eyes on the horizon. The crew has ginger tea — a traditional remedy. Tell a crew member if you feel unwell.
Ages 5 and over are welcome on the morning cruise. Life jackets in child sizes are provided. Children must be supervised by a parent or guardian in the water at all times. The morning timing works well for families — back by mid-afternoon before children get overtired. For a later departure, consider the Sunset Catamaran Cruise (ages 8+).
The catamaran has a small number of steps between deck levels. The marina boarding ramp is generally flat but may have a slight incline depending on tide. The shaded aft deck is the most accessible area. Guests with limited mobility: please contact us before booking so we can discuss your specific needs. We accommodate where possible.
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Within 48 hours: a full refund is provided only if we can rebook your spaces to other guests. Cancelled cruises due to weather: full refund or free rebooking — always your choice.
Both are exceptional. Both are Ultimate Route. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.
